"Each person is a unique expression of consciousness"

Vasant Lad, Founder of the Ayurvedic Institute

What is Ayurveda?

Ayurveda is an ancient system of medicine that originated in India over 5,000 years ago. The term "Ayurveda" is derived from the Sanskrit words "ayur," meaning life, and "veda," meaning knowledge or science. Ayurveda can be translated as the "science of life”.

Key principles of Ayurveda include:

Balance: Ayurveda emphasizes balance in all aspects of life, including physical, mental, and emotional well-being. Ayurveda believes that imbalance contributes to illness.

• Doshas: Ayurveda believes each individual was born with a specific constitution. Made up of a proportion of each of the three doshas: Vata, Pitta, and Kapha. Each dosha is associated with specific physical and mental traits and requires a unique approach to maintain balance.

• Holistic Approach: Ayurveda views the body and mind as interconnected, and it considers various factors such as diet, lifestyle, exercise, and mental health when evaluating a person's health.

Natural Healing: Ayurveda relies on natural remedies, including herbs, diet, yoga, meditation, and lifestyle adjustments, to promote health and address illness.

• Prevention: Ayurveda strongly emphasizes preventive measures to maintain health and prevent disease. This includes seasonal routines and dietary guidelines.

Individualized Treatment: Ayurvedic treatments are highly personalized. When recommending therapies, an Ayurvedic Health Counselor considers an individual’s unique constitution, imbalances, and specific health concerns.

Detoxification: Ayurveda places importance on detoxifying the body to remove toxins and promote optimal health. This process is typically done at the change of seasons.

Mind-Body Connection: Ayurveda recognizes the profound influence of the mind on physical health and vice versa. Techniques like meditation and stress reduction are integral to Ayurvedic practices.

Herbal Medicine: Ayurveda employs an array of herbs and recipes to address various health conditions.
